A Car Accident Attorney Or Drunk Driving Lawyer Can Wage War Against Drunk Driver Carnage

By Bruce Westbrook

Annually, America's horrendous death toll from drunk drivers reaches its apex in what should be a joyful holiday season. But year-end celebrations lead to increased indulgence, and increased drunk driving, which in turn leads to severe injuries and even fatalities for innocent victims of drunk driving accidents.

If someone close to you or a loved one becomes such a victim, find some comfort in the fact that you can redress the wrong with a drunk driving lawsuit. An experienced drunk driving lawyer or car accident attorney can seek full and fair financial compensation for your loved one's losses, such as medical expenses, lost present and future salary, and pain and suffering.

This form of legal action is necessary and vital, in that America's drunk driving toll is catastrophically high. In 2007 alone, 13,000 Americans died due to drunk drivers -- almost a third of all who died in traffic collisions. And in the state of Texas in 2008, drunk drivers slaughtered 975 persons. That's 28 per cent of the total traffic accident fatalities.

Since 1982, more than half a million Americans have been killed by drunk drivers. That's more than all American combat deaths in every war since and including World War II. In short, drunk drivers are slaughtering Americans far more than any foreign enemies in an undeclared war which knows no end.

To fight back, Texas has expanded its drunk driving laws to give police officers a better chance to make a drunk driving arrest. Since Sept. 1, 2009, police have been authorized to secure blood samples for discerning blood alcohol levels (BAC) of suspected drunk drivers without first receiving a warrant to do so. That can be done only if the suspected drunk driver has a drunk driving record; if a victim other than the suspect has died or is expected to die; if a victim other than the suspect endures an injury that needs hospital treatment; or if at least one passenger in any of the accident's vehicles is under 15 years of age.

Further fighting drunk drivers is the group Mothers Against Drunk Driving, or MADD, a nationwide organization which has chapters throughout Texas. MADD helps drunk driving victims and their families or survivors to cope with grief, but that's not all. It also supports new laws to combat drunk driving carnage, including a law mandating breath-testing devices in cars to keep a drunk driver from starting the engine.

Though these strategies all can help, the horrible drunk driving toll continues. That's why it must be made clear to drunk drivers that they'll be held responsible for their actions, legally and economically. An experienced drunk driving lawyer or car accident attorney can send that message in a fight for legal justice. - 31397
